Charlie McCarthy - The Haunted Hideout

Howdy Doody? Charlie McCarthy! You can thank Karswell of The Horrors Of It All for providing me with the scans for this and blame me for posting it(tee-hee!). For true vent-figure terror, head on over to THOIA today as we jointly offer homage to the evil Anti-Pinocchio...

That cover is rather creepy for a humor comic. It looks like a long lost Chucky film.

Long before I knew that Charlie McC was a golden era star of stage and screen I remember seeing the dolls in the toy catalogs, usually displayed with Bozo, Howdy Doody and afro'd Lester. My cousin got one for xmas one year and we had a blast with it... that is until the movie MAGIC came out in 1978 and then we all ran screaming from it.

when i was a kid, i thought Mr. Peanut was actually Charlie McCarthy, whom i imagined had eaten too many peanuts! i didn't know that back then EVERYBODY went around in top hats and monocles, even women. well, maybe that was just in pre-Hitler Berlin...

if you've never seen the film Charlie McCarthy, Detective, maybe you should, it's an excellent example of Edger Bergen's(and Charlie's)talents. just expect to see more lip movement than you would expect from a world-famous ventriloquist...
