Famous Monsters Do-It-Yourself Monster Make-Up Handbook

Sooo, there's just one thing I gotta know- you guys wanna see the inside of this magazine? I don't know how many of my usual readers would be interested in a make-up book, even if it's a really cool one. If you do want to see it, I need to get hoppin' cause it is a book of many pages and it's getting close to Halloween in terms of deciding on what you want to be and this might give you some groovy, retro-monster ideas. Let me know or i'm just gonna leave it at this...maybe! MOO-HOO-ha-ha-ha!!!...

Had a friend who ordered the make-up book one time and was so disappointed that the makeups werent easier! The only time he tried it he looked horrible...but not the way he had hoped for.

I agree with the first guy, and will amplify the frustrations hundreds if not thousands of kids must have felt at the time, using my own experience with the book. I bought the book off the magazine rack at the drugstore when it came out. HAD TO HAVE! But get it home, and one quickly grasped that these definitely weren't make-ups for children or un-dedicated amateurs to attempt. Getting my hands on the key ingredients alone -- such as mortician's wax or liquid latex or spirit gum -- proved utterly impossible in 1965. Can you imagine?! Maybe if you lived in L.A. or NYC it would have been easier, what with TV, movie and stage communities nearby needing these things. But for a nine year old living in the mid-west, they might as well have been telling me to go get a bucket of plutonium from Woolworth's.

A really neat post, by the way. Thanks!

i too discovered it wasn't as easy as i thought it would be, but it was just such a cool book i didn't care!...

Oh yeah, agreed. I wore my copy out. It had a magical "wish book" quality to it, even if you weren't actively attempting any of the make-ups, that kept me going back to it for years.

Thanks for posting this treasure! I too owned the magazine as a kid, and remember building a makeup room in the backyard and attempting Dick Smith's bread crumb/latex face application. Took me two weeks to get the latex out of my eyebrows. I feel sorry for the kids in the 60s because the ingredients were so hard to find. When I had the book in the mid 70s they were much easier to get, at least liquid latex. I never did try to order anything from the addresses in the book. Thanks for this great classic!

I worked my way backwards from the home page -- I hadn't seen this in years. Thanks
(To all those who thought the materials would have been easier to obtain if they lived in NYC -- nope, not for a kid. Make up items at the theatrical supply houses were way overpriced for kids in the mid-60s. It might have been easier to order them, but you wouldn't have been able to pay for them.)
