Wow. You nailed it. That's the strangest kids' comic story I've seen. The whole thing sort of skitters along on some schizophrenic edge. I loved it. I mean, even the mouse looks bizarre - with those huge skull ears.
I can't help but feel "Rikk" got sort of screwed, though.
it's lots of fun guessing what the writer's state of mind might have been at the time, to produce this grim concept. i know golden age comics could be brutal, but Space Mouse? what do i know, this is the only issue i've ever read...
That's a great fight cloud panel on page 3-- "POW! WHAM! BAM! SOCK!" (someone lost a sock?) And how did Space Mouse knock him out with that punch? --he's wearing a helmet! This was cool as all hell.
Weird coincidence. I came across this issue of Space Mouse when I was a wayward youth digging through boxes of (at the time) otherwise unsalable golden-age comics at the Northside Book Emporium. I distinctly remember the owner's comment to me when I bought it: "You really like the weird crap, don't you?" Yes. Yes I do.
