No, you're not seeing double and you're not seeing Jan & Dean anywhere around this record, instead you're seeing the infamous Sun Ra & his Arkestra/Blues Project version of a Batman cash-in record, and an infinitely more cynical cash-in it is. There's lots of info out there about this record so i won't bore you with details. My folks bought me this record back in '66 and needless to say,
it befuddled me...
I found this cover image for Batman #130 over at Monster Brains and here are my scans of the cover story, "The Hand From Nowhere". In other words, they don't know where this hand has been...
Lex Luthor?!?...
Not sure how this record got in my collection...I think it belonged to an older brother...but I'm still befuddled by it...and still carrying it around.
ReplyDeleteI had that record too, and I also was confused by it, both the similarity to the J$D cover, and the lack of Batmaniness in the songs.
ReplyDeletei only posted this record for the remaining five people on earth who don't have it already, i think...
ReplyDeleteIs it possible that you could post page 7 of this story? Thanks!
ReplyDeletewhoops! i first i just thought i neglected to upload it, as it turned out i didn't even scan it! anyway, my apologies!
ReplyDeleteThanks, prof! I'm VERY grateful!
ReplyDeleteI wish my parents would've befuddled me and bought me some cool records like this when I was a kid, they knew I loved music but it never occured to either of them to feed my turntable needs.
ReplyDeletesame with mine and guitars!
ReplyDeleteWhere the Hell have I been all my life??
ReplyDeleteProf.: I love this era of Batman - that big, square body and head for Batman - those great, surreal plots that were actually done for kids and not adults wishing so earnestly for comics to be taken seriously. Goddamit, bring that Batman back now! I am sick onto puking of this grumbling, stupid thug that needs a shave we have now.
ReplyDeletecouldn't agree more! i mean really, it's a comic book!!! i feel sorry for kids nowadays, the most reality in comics/cartoon form we had to deal with was Speed Racer- people die sometime! well, people died in Batman sometimes too, but it was to impart a basic message, which was, "don't be a bad guy!"...and get your exercise!
ReplyDeleteI got this comic book as a kimd and still have it, minus the cover. Good memories around it! I was sick, and my mom picked it along with a couple other comics and brought it home to me.
ReplyDeletehey Fred, long time no hear from! it's funny, anytime i was sick, my folks brought home Archie comics. i think my dad wanted to make sure i was interested in girls!...
